Luck smiled on one of the candidates, a pregnant woman who put to bed on her way to the venue of the scholarship examination as she got automatic scholarship with additional Two Hundred Thousand Naira, for making it back to the venue from the Labour Room.
Three hundred and ninety undergraduates from various tertiary institutions have qualified for the 2023 Monday Onyeme Foundation Scholarship, sponsored by the Delta state deputy governor, Sir Monday Onyeme.
The Monday Onyeme Foundation Scholarship Scheme, instituted in 2016, is designed to render financial assistance to indigenes of Ndokwa West Local Government Area in tertiary institutions .
The scholarship scheme was later expanded to accommodate all students of Ndokwa extraction, with another expansion this year, to accommodate all students who reside in Ndokwa West, Ndokwa East and Ukwuani local, government areas.
Two thousand, two hundred and forty five students applied for this year’s scholarship, and nine hundred and eighty one were shortlisted, under a rigorous process, to write the examination.
The students answered fifty questions in the one hour examination under strict invigilation in subject areas such as Mathematics, English language, Current Affairs and General Studies.
After the examination, the question papers were marked immediately by the examiners including the State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, the member representing Ndokwa East in the State House of Assembly, Honourable Prince Osamuta, the Commissioner for Urban Renewal, Mr Mike Anoka, and the chairman of the Ndokwa West council, chief Obi Nzete, as well as teachers.
Addressing the students after the examination, Sir Onyeme who is the President of the Foundation, advised them to be serious with their studies.
He told the students to strive for academic excellence, just as he encouraged those who were not successful to try again, next year.
The Deputy Governor who also engaged in supervision during the examination, thanked those who made donations towards the scholarship scheme, which had made it possible for the scheme to be enlarged, to accommodate more students.
Two overall best candidates who scored 44 marks out of 50, got additional One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira, the second position came with an additional One Hundred Thousand Naira, while the third position attracted Fifty Thousand Naira.

The Chairman of the Ndokwa West Council, Chief Obi Nzete lauded the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme for the scholarship initiative, saying it had helped several students in their educational pursuits.
Some of the beneficiaries thanked the Deputy Governor for making her educational dreams with his scholarship scheme.
The successful candidates will be presented with their cheques next week at the Utagba -Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale.
