The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly Honourable Emomotimi Guwor has emphasized the need to sharpen skills of legislators for proficiency in constitutional duties.
Honourable Guwor stated this at the opening of a 4- day post induction retreat for members of the 8th Assembly, which held in Asaba.
He said legislators needed more than common sense in applying the Standing Orders and Rules of the House as well as approach in the oversight functions in standing committees assignment and meaningful debate.
The speaker added that as representatives of the people, the legislators are expected to play active role in the government of the state.
He said the retreat would not only provide them with necessary insight on how best to navigate complex governance issues in the course of legislative duties but also guide them through the labyrinth of legislative niceties they confront daily as legislators.
The Acting Clerk of the House, Oto Ogogobia while welcoming the participants, said the retreat was in furtherance of the earlier pre- inauguration induction program organized for elected-members of the 8th Assembly which also served as fresher course for ranking members.
He expressed the believe of the leadership of the State Assembly that the post- induction retreat would address some of the strategic areas of legislative practices and procedures.
The retreat is expected to feature paper presentations on Leadership tips: Budget preparation and Appropriation processes, Fundamental of Legislative oversight and Mental health and Understanding the Standing orders of the House, by resource persons.
