The need to post members of the National Youth Service Corps, in accordance with their areas of specialisation has been brought to the fore.
The Deputy Governor of Delta State, sir Monday Onyeme stated this when he received the State Director of the NYSC, Mr Alao Olusegun who paid him a courtesy visit in his office at the Government House, Asaba.
The Deputy Governor said the NYCS scheme, as a means of national integration, would be more effective when Corp members are posted to areas where they could apply the knowledge gained in school.
He acknowledged that most Nigerians had benefited from the scheme, and urged stakeholders to continue to contribute their quota to the growth of the scheme.
The Deputy Governor assured the NYSC officials that the state government was ready to support NYSC projects and programmes in the state, and to look into the issue of allowances paid to Corp members by the state government.
According to Onyeme, “NYSC is a medium of national integration that is why people are posted to different parts of the country.
“It is a very good scheme which every Nigerian youth is looking forward to participate in; in our time, we enjoyed the scheme and some of us got jobs where we served; the NYSC scheme is a very good scheme, it is a scheme that most Nigerians are proud of.
“The purpose of the scheme is not lost, and I want to say that we can keep encouraging this scheme to succeed because, apart from the integration, it makes the youths to have close relationship with Nigerians who are not from the localities.
“I will suggest that the scheme should be such that graduates are posted to serve in their areas of specialization, places where they can apply the knowledge that they acquired in school.”
The NYSC State Director, Mr Alao Olusegun said the visit was to felicitate with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme on their victory at the polls, as well as to inform the state government of some areas of critical needs where assistance was required.

The Commissioners for Higher Education, Professor Johnbull Tonikari, Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services and Girl Child Development, Ms Orode Uduaghan and the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Sir Christopher Osakwe, were in attendance.
