Police have arrested a man in Victoria over the theft of a rare Mustang, which was painted black and had its spoilers removed in an attempt to avoid detection.
The $400,000 2021 Ford Mustang Shelby was stolen from a south-east Melbourne garage last month, in what police described as a “brazen” theft.
It comes after police made a public appeal to find the car.
Police discovered the car following a tip-off last week, executing a search warrant at an address in Narre Warren.
Police said the one-of-a-kind car had been wrapped in black paint and the spoiler removed.
The one-of-a-kind Mustang was stolen from its former racecar driver owner last month.
CCTV images from early October showed two men loitering out the front of Mustang Motorsport, before one of the men, wearing a black baseball cap and sunglasses drove off with the Mustang
Police said vehicles were being moved in and out of the showroom at the time and the key to the car was accessible.
Detectives charged a Narre Warren man, 37, overnight with theft, driving on a disqualified licence and drug possession.
He was remanded to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court.
A 32-year-old Carrum Downs man was interviewed and released without charge.
The owner of the Mustang, 60-year-old former racer Craig Dean, told media he was disappointed by the theft.
“It’s pretty devastating really that someone could come in and take your possession,” he said.
