Niger state government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of students in the state.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Niger State, Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Mammagi, stated this when he led a delegation comprising the Permanent Secretary Dr. Usman Idris Gbogan and other ministry officials, to inspect the newly constructed female hostels at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBB), Lapai.
While the purpose of the visit was initially to review the infrastructure of the hostel, spearheaded by the Niger State Government, several pressing concerns were raised during the inspection.
Among the issues identified were the inadequate number of toilets and cases of students disposing heavy items in the available toilets, where the need to warn students against such behavior was emphasized.
Observing the state of the hostels, Hon. Mammagi urged the university to maintain higher cleanliness standards, even if it meant seeking external expert consultation.
On the issue of water stagnation around the hostel premises, suggestions were made to improve the floor design for better drainage.
The Commissioner highlighted the current inefficiencies in access to water, noting that students do not have to leave the hostels in search of water.
The lack of laundry facilities and inadequate sewage connections for toilets further heightened concerns.
The school management and the visiting delegation discussed potential solutions, including consulting a quantity surveyor who recommended planting trees around the hostels and creating drainage pits.
While concluding the visit, a student forum was organized, to provide opportunities for students to express their challenges with the new facilities.
Responding, Hon. Mammagi, assured the students that synergy between the university and the ministry will result in prompt measures to address the highlighted issues.
The visit underscores the Niger State Government’s proactive stance on ensuring the best facilities for its students, and fosters open dialogue and swift action on areas of concern.
