The Government of Delta State, Nigeria, today organised an interdenominational thanksgiving service in commemoration of the nation’s independence anniversary
The service which took place at the Cenotaph Asaba was attended by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Emomotimi Guwor,deputy Speaker Hon Arthur Akpovwowo and other top government functionaries.
Speaking at the event,Governor Sheriff Oborevwori said the Independence Day was an event to celebrate the nation’s freedom from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, adding that it was worth thanking God to see the country undivided for 63 years, despite numerous challenges
Governor Oborevwori paid tribute to the founding fathers of the nation who fought for the country’s independence and acknowledged the courage, sacrifices, and tenacity of the nation’s heroes including past and present leaders at all levels, for their determination and commitment to keep the country as one united family..
He said his administration was irrevocably committed to advancing urban-rural integration through the construction of critical road infrastructure and urban renewal.
The Governor said in fulfilment of his pledge during his electioneering campaign, his administration had commenced the process of giving Warri a face lift with the award of contract for the construction of three new bridges and flyovers.
In the health sector, he said he has given approval for the establishment of Oxygen Plants in the General Hospitals at Ughelli, Warri and Asaba, coupled with the process of revamping 260 healthcare centres across the state.
Governor Oborevwori reminded the people that the free medical care for pregnant women and children aged zero to five years was also being sustained, adding that with the three new universities in the state, secondary school leavers now have improved and expanded access to tertiary education.
He appreciated the state House of Assembly, traditional rulers, public servants whose cooperation, he said has helped in stabilizing his administration and urged Deltans to continue in the spirit of brotherhood, love, and peaceful co-existence for the progress of the state and country at large.
In a sermon titled “The Righteousness That Exalts A Nation” the former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Delta State chapter, Reverend Gideon Oyibo said righteousness was all that was needed for the nation to surmount its challenges.
Reverend Oyibo congratulated Nigerians on the celebration, identified selflessness and genuine purpose in line with God’s will on the part of leaders and masses as ways to take the country to the desired level of growth and development.
Governor Oborevwori inspected the guard of honour by the police and other paramilitary agencies in the state and cut the independence cake while special prayers were offered for the country, the state, leaders at all levels of governance including the governor and members of his family as well as Deltans.
The Delta State Arts and Culture troupe were on hand to entertain guests.
