Olympics Qualifier: Matildas defeat Philippines 8-0

The Matildas have scored a phenomenal 8-0 win over the Philippines in Olympics qualifying match.

Perth’s hometown hero, Sam Kerr scored a hat-trick, while Caitlin Foord also slotted three in a ruthless performance.

Post-game, Kerr agreed that the match was an occasion where everything went right.

After missing out on a number of chances early, Mary Fowler was first on the scoresheet, hitting a pinpoint finish into the far post after 15 minutes.

Kerr had her first four minutes later.

Foord then had her first half double with goals in the 30th and 33rd minutes before Kerr struck again right on half-time to make it 5-0.

Twenty-five seconds into the second half, Kerr scored her hat-trick, heading a goal from close range.

Ten minutes later, Foord had her third goal, dribbling from outside the box and slotting it home near post.

The Matildas weren’t done at 7-0 though, with substitute Clare Wheeler scoring the goal of the match from outside the box.

“What a finish from Clare Wheeler, what a special moment,” ex-Matilda Grace Gill said on Paramount+.

After Wheeler’s 72nd-minute finish, the goals stopped with the Matildas finishing 8-0 winners.

The only concern for the home side was Cortnee Vine leaving the field after a 10-minute cameo and was pictured with ice on her hamstring.
