….As DSCHC Reiterates Commitment to Universal Health Coverage.
The need for sustained advocacy to all stakeholders in addressing the problem of climate Change, was the fulcrum of the 3rd Roundtable on Sustainable Development, organized by the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun- Center for Sustainable Development, FUPRE- CSD, held at the university campus.
The Programme with the theme -“Climate Change and Energy Transition; Pain or Gain”, saw the investiture of the Director General/ CEO of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission, Dr. Isaac Akpoveta as FUPRE CSD New partner, alongside the state Commissioner for Environment, Mr Hon. Ejiro Jemani, Mr. Shola Mese, Dr. Joyce Ugbosu, and Chairman Estako East Local Government, Edo State Princess Benedicta Attoh.
Chairman of the DSCHC, Dr. Austin Obidi was also installed the FUPRE -CSD New SDGs Champion, alongside the SSA to the state governor on SDGs Mrs Diana Eyo- Enoette, with other FUPRE – CSD New Advocates.
Awards were presented to them as Eco Ambassadors, in recognition of their impact so far.
Receiving the award, Dr. Austin Obidi said the Delta State Contributory Health Commission remained a major financier of health in the state and commended FUPRE for establishing a Center for Sustainable Development.
Dr. Obidi who was a panelist at the event said deforestation activities carried out by foreign companies in collaboration with some locals, unbridled use of plastics, gas flaring and other such activities that affected planet earth and its inhabitants, should be addressed by all stakeholders including traditional rulers, while punishment should be meted on offenders to serve as deterrent.

Dedicating his award to the MORE agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Dr. Isaac Akpoveta said many were already suffering the effect of climate change hence the Delta state Government set up a social health insurance company to cater mostly for vulnerable persons, known as the Delta State Contributory Heath Commission, with a mandate to meet the SDG 3, Universal Health coverage
Dr. Akpoveta who was also a panelist at the event, said the Commission had so far enrolled over 2million residents into the various initiatives of the scheme including the Indigent Enrollee Adoption Initiative, Artisan Enrollee Inducement Initiative and the Tertiary Institution Social Health Insurance Programme TSHIP, noting that 12,000 students were among the enrollees.
The DG reiterated the determination of Governor Oborevwori in ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing quality and affordable healthcare in the state.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ejiro Jamani said the Ministry of Environment carried out routine environmental monitoring and compliance exercise, sensitization campaigns on sound environmental practices, ecological stabilization, climate change adaptation and mitigation measures, including Waste recycling tree planting and solar energy investment
He said Governments must enact policies to transition to renewable energy, promote energy efficiency, and phase out fossil fuel subsidies, Businesses must embrace sustainable practices, innovate new technologies, and adopt circular economy models, while Individuals must make conscious choices in their daily lives to reduce their carbon footprint and advocate for change.
The Chairman of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, Olorogun John Nani, represented by Mr. Saboje Odin – Newton, said man’s everyday activity took a toll on the ecosystem, adding that such roundtable afforded stakeholders opportunity to cross-fertilize ideas and chart the way forward in overcoming challenges facing the ecosystem and ecological balance.
Olorogun Nani who was also the Chairman on the occasion, emphasized the importance of collaborating and supporting the humane efforts of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, towards climate change mitigation, and urged all to align their efforts with the vision and initiatives of the Delta State Government and particularly the Ministry of Environment to amplify the impact of human actions and drive towards a more meaningful and viable change in the state and beyond.
In an earlier remark, the Host, Vice Chancellor FUPRE, Prof. Rim -Rukeh AkpSchool schthe university had 19 academic programs and 14 centers of academic excellence, one of which is the center for Sustainable Development Goals, which has remained active in promoting the objectives of the SDGs saying that the roundtable presented opportunity for a concerted action and undivided attention of all stakeholders to address the global problem of climate change.
