….Says Malaria is Deadly Yet Trivialized.

The Delta state Coordinator, 50/50 Action Women Group for Gender Accountability and Equity, Comrade Patricia Gbemudu has called on parents especially mothers to play their part in protecting their households from malaria.
Comrade Gbemudu in a statement made available to Journalists to mark the 2024 World Malaria Day, said malaria is life threatening especially for children under five years and pregnant women, expressing concern at the way many families allowed mosquitoes breed around them, and trivialized the consequences.
She said prevention was key in the fight against malaria, and urged mothers to arm themselves with knowledge on how best to keep their families safe from Malaria, especially now that the rains had come.
Comrade Gbemudu who is a former Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ,, Delta State Chapter, said one of the most effective ways of preventing malaria infection is sleeping under an insecticide-treated bed net (ITN), discarding stagnant waters to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and maintaining proper hygiene inside and around their homes
While harping on the theme of the year’s celebration; “Accelarate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world”, she stated that universal health coverage was achievable when everyone played their role .
Comrade Gbemudu who commended the Delta state government for the efforts made so far in protecting residents from the malaria scourge, urged the state government to increase the number of insecticides treated net distributed to families and healthcare facilities across the state, even as she appealed to residents to put the nets given to them into good use for the protection of their households from the bite of mosquitoes.
